Your First Child Psychologist Session – How To Prepare?

Start by gently explaining the purpose of the visit to your child in a way that's appropriate for their age and understanding.

Before the session, share any essential information about your child with the psychologist, including behaviour patterns, academic concerns, social dynamics, health history, and any significant life changes or stressors.

Also, bring any relevant documents or past evaluations to provide a comprehensive view of your child's history. This preparation helps ensure a productive start to your child's journey toward well-being.

  • What does a therapy session look like?
The first session is allocated to assessment and goal setting. Together we setup goals and plan how to achieve them. We discuss your concerns and will develop a plan to determine the most suitable approach to support you and/your child. The length and the number of sessions would also be discussed during the assessment. A therapy session includes check in, discussion around the raised concerns/reflective activity (art/play based) followed by reflection and closure.
  • How long is a session?
The initial appointment is generally 90 minutes to go through the clients' history and required forms and documentation. A regular therapy session is 50 minutes and we allow 10 minutes for clean up and closing. Focus groups (Maximum 4 clients) and open studio (Maximum 6) are 90 minutes with the same sequence.

  • What is NDIS early intervention?
Your child’s early years are very important as they set up how they will learn and develop later in life. Children with disability or developmental delays must access appropriate therapy services to support them during this time. A developmental delay can apply to any area of development that reduces a child’s functional capacity. The delay may relate to their: Language and communication Fine or gross motor development Self-care skills Social skills Cognitive development Emotional or sensory regulation The aim of NDIS early childhood intervention services is to provide ready access to therapy services at the earliest possible stage to reduce the impact of a child’s impairment on their functional capacity and their need for support in the future. Research shows that the earlier the intervention, the better the outcomes. Children with access to this support are in a much better position to overcome developmental challenges. Early intervention services for developmental delay and learning disabilities aim to promote a child’s development, family and child wellbeing, and community participation.
  • What should I expect from my therapy sessions?
Therapy is a gradual process, and our first session is primarily for assessing where things stand rather than providing immediate solutions. This gradual approach allows for a deeper understanding and more effective solutions over time. A skilled therapist is here to assist you in organising your thoughts and breaking down your concerns into smaller, achievable steps. You and your child will have a chance to discuss the plan and expectations during the parent consultation and their first session, ensuring clarity about what is ahead.
  • How does a change of clinician work and hwow does it impact me?
Changing practitioners is a natural part of finding the right fit for your child's therapy journey. If your child feels they haven't connected with their therapist or if there are concerns about their experience, it's important to speak up. Practitioners understand and encourage open communication rather than discontinuing treatment altogether. Here are your options if you'd like to switch to another practitioner: Talk directly to the practitioner you've been seeing. They are eager to help and can facilitate a transfer to someone better suited to your child's needs. Contact the clinic receptionist, who can arrange for your child to see a different clinician who may be a better match. Request a referral to another practice if you feel that would better meet your child's needs. Our top priorities are your child's comfort and progress, and we're here to help you find the best therapeutic fit.
  • How can I provide feedback to Wonderful Mind about my therapy services?
We highly value receiving feedback and welcome any input on improving our service. We would like you to speak directly with your therapist to give any compliments or criticism or be in touch directly with our directors with the contact details provided below.
